It has been more than half a year since Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia. The WNBA superstar was first arrested in February because her luggage contained cannabis oil vape cartridges. Recently, she has been sentenced to 9 years in prison. She has maintained that she didn’t have the intent to break Russian law. There have been talks about a prisoner swap between the two countries. However, a lot of people in the country are against giving back an arms dealer to Russia.

The team at betonline.ag set out to find people from which part of the country supported the WNBA All-Star’s return. Also, to find which part of the country is showing the least support.

Using trends software with direct access to geotagged Twitter data from more than 180,000 tweets, the group determined which states produced the most tweets with phrases like “free brittney griner,” “bring brittney home,” “#wearebg,” “#freebrittneygriner,” and more that expressed support for Griner. And the WNBA star might not be too happy with the results.

Unsurprisingly, the state of Arizona showed the most support for Griner. It is the hometown of the Phoenix Mercury WNBA team and it tops the list. South Carolina and Oregon came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. However, Griner’s native, Houston, Texas was not in the top 10 states that showed the most support for her. The fact that her own state isn’t showing a whole lot of support would come as a shock for Griner.

However, she has been receiving a lot of support from many celebrities in the country. Even during the NBA finals, the Boston Celtics showed their support by wearing ‘WE ARE BG’ shirts. Then the WNBA picked that up. NBA superstar LeBron James voiced his passionate support for the two-time Olympic Gold medalist. James was not happy with the efforts of the country.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal showed his support for Griner in his podcast. He said that he wants her back home. Shaq also said that it is an all-around unfortunate issue. He also suggested that she is a political pawn. After she was sentenced to 9 years, there was a huge outrage. Many people felt that the sentence was excessive.

Many celebrities from the Hip-hop world showed their outrage at the sentencing. Recently, Griner’s attorneys have appealed to the Russian court. On the other hand, there are many who don’t feel that way. Also, there are people who feel that the sentence is harsh, but doesn’t think the United States should give up an arms dealer to bring her back.
