Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made mistakes as a rookie. Some of them became highlights. A second-round pick from Notre Dame, Owusu-Koramoah was one of the bright spots during Cleveland's otherwise gloomy season in 2021. He played in 14 games, made 10 starts and had several big plays thanks to his blazing speed. The 22-year-old lined up all over the field last season, and he's expected to have an expanded role in Year 2. Owusu-Koramoah has impressed coaches and teammates with his humility and hustle.

Derek Wolfe signed a one-day contract with the Broncos so he could retire in Denver, where he spent the bulk of his NFL career. Wolfe says injuries finally caught up to him and now he's looking forward to chasing his 3-year-old daughter around instead of pursuing quarterbacks. Wolfe helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 as a key part of one of the stingiest defenses in league history. He spent his last two seasons in Baltimore but he didn't play in 2021 after injuring a hip in August. He was released by the Ravens last month.

The U.S. Forest Service has ordered a halt to the expansion of a Rocky Mountains ski resort after contractors mistakenly demolished protected alpine tundra to create a temporary road. The Colorado Sun reported Friday that the Keystone Resort expansion of new trails and lifts was stopped after officials saw work crews carving the path into protected land outside the approved construction area. The halt issued earlier this month suspended development of Keystone resort’s 0.9-square-mile expansion until the environmental impacts of the unauthorized road are evaluated. That could delay the opening of the the resort’s 16-trail expansion this winter. Keystone Resort is owned by Vail Resorts, Inc.

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived undrafted rookie Andrew Mevis a day after he badly missed three field-goal attempts during a training camp practice. They signed free agent Elliott Fry to fill his roster spot. Fry will now compete with Ryan Santoso for Jacksonville’s kicking job. Mevis nailed former Dallas Cowboys coach Dave Campo in the shoulder with one errant kick and sent two more groups of onlookers scattering during warmups Thursday. It was enough to prompt the Jaguars to move in another direction less than a week before the team’s preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh has followed her success at the World Aquatic Championships with a stunning swim at the Commonwealth Games. The 15-year-old McIntosh easily beat her opposition in the 400-meter individual medley. McIntosh established a new event mark and personal best of 4:29.01 in her dominant win. Alex Yee earlier won the first gold medal in Birmingham and Hayden Wilde provided the first bit of sportsmanship. Yee and Wilde were almost level during the concluding 5-kilometer run in the men’s triathlon when the latter learned he had been handed a 10-second penalty. Wilde slowed rather than challenging for the finish line so Yee could cross first and celebrate his victory. But Wilde will appeal and Yee is sympathetic.

The hottest rivalry in sailing heads across the pond to Old Blighty, where Sir Ben Ainslie and his British crew will face the tall task of defending home waters against Tom Slingsby and his crew of seemingly unbeatable Australians.  Team Australia will try to run its SailGP winning streak to six during the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix Plymouth on Saturday and Sunday. The Aussies won the Plymouth regatta last year while Britain finished fourth, with Paul Goodison filling in for Ainslie while the national star was with his wife for the birth of their second child.

Third-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut will have to wait to find out who he will play in the final at the Generali Open as rain delayed play for the second straight day. Bautista Agut advanced Friday after beating fifth-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 7-6 (3). He will play either Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann or Austrian wild card Filip Misolic in the final. Their semifinal match was suspended due to rain with Misolic leading Hanfmann 1-0 in the decisive third-set tiebreaker after the two split the previous two sets 6-2.

Kadarius Toney’s rookie season with the New York Giants is best described as one great game, one good one and couple of  flashes. It wasn’t what the Giants needed from the first-round draft pick from Florida in a 2021 season where expectations were high. He finished with 39 catches for 420 yards, no touchdowns and lot of little injuries that limited him to 10 games. While Friday’s practice was only the third of training camp, Toney has been impressive. The 6-footer had a highlight-reel catch over cornerback Aaron Robinson in the corner of the end zone on Day 1.

Felix Rosenqvist continues to fight for his seat in the IndyCar Series with a pole-winning run on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Swede earned his second pole of the season with a run of 1 minute, 10.2265 seconds in Friday qualifying. It’s the second pole of the season for Rosenqvist, who is making the case for keeping his ride in IndyCar with Arrow McLaren SP. The contract extension he recently signed with McLaren Racing gives boss Zak Brown the ability to shift Rosenqvist to Formula E next season. Alexander Rossi qualified second for Andretti Autosport and Pato O'Ward was third for McLaren.

Under Armour has agreed to pay UCLA $67.49 million to resolve a lawsuit filed two years ago. UCLA filed a lawsuit against Under Armour in August, 2020, in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for breach of contract, seeking damages in excess of $200 million. The settlement was reached in late May and approved by the University of California’s Board of Regents. Under Armour announced two years ago that it was ending its deal with UCLA. The two sides were four years into a 15-year deal worth $280 million, which was the highest in college athletics.

LOS ANGELES — Would minor league players be paid more if they could negotiate freely with every team?

The Pac-12 pushed for legislation allowing conference title games to be played without requiring divisions, and it was the first conference to take advantage of it, deciding to have the two teams with the best records this season play against one another in Las Vegas on Dec. 2. However, it has yet to outline the exact rules that will determine what happens if multiple teams have the same record. The Pac-12’s senior associate commissioner overseeing football said the forthcoming criteria will be exclusively based on conference results.

LOS ANGELES — A six-year saga that started with smiles and handshakes ended with a sterile settlement document, Under Armour agreeing to pay UCLA $67.491 million to resolve the school's lawsuit against the sports apparel giant, according to a document reviewed by The Times.

Chicago Bears center Lucas Patrick is out indefinitely because of a right hand injury, leaving a retooled offensive line without an important piece. Coach Matt Eberflus confirmed Friday that Patrick injured his right hand and said there is no timetable for his return. Offensive tackle Teven Jenkins missed his second straight practice and defensive back Thomas Graham Jr. sat out Friday’s practice. Eberflus declined to say if they were injured or sick. He said Jenkins was “working through something with the trainers,” and so was Graham.

Houston Texans rookie receiver John Metchie III, who announced Sunday that he’d likely miss the season after being diagnosed with leukemia, addressed the team in a video before it started preparations for the season. Coach Lovie Smith says he normally opens camp with a speech to the team. But this year he thought it was more important for the guys to hear from Metchie first. Smith didn’t provide specifics about what the second-round pick from Alabama shared with the team but said that teammates and coaches alike were moved by his words.

Training camp is giving two-time All-Pro Kevin Byard a sense of normalcy as the Tennessee Titans safety works through the grief over his mother’s unexpected death this summer. Byard says at times he still feels in a bit of shock with the death of Artina Stanley yet to sink in. Byard left the Titans’ mandatory minicamp June 14 when his mother fell ill. She died a week later. His football routine helps. Now Byard finds himself as the oldest member of the Titans' secondary after the unexpected retirement of Buster Skrine just before the start of camp. Byard says that's a bit weird going into his seventh NFL season even as his standard and personal expectations remain high.

Brandon Aiyuk feels like he’s in a good place after an up-and-down first two seasons in the NFL. Aiyuk followed up a promising rookie season in 2020 with a stint in coach Kyle Shanahan’s doghouse early last season. Aiyuk recovered in the second half to make a big impact on San Francisco’s offense and is building on that for 2022. Shanahan says Aiyuk’s rollercoaster start to his career can be attributed partially to the weird circumstances he faced as a rookie when there was no offseason program and he didn't learn the level of work needed to thrive in the NFL.

Now is the time to tune into American motorsports, on display all weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where NASCAR and IndyCar intersect with both series embroiled in turmoil. Two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden was medically cleared to race on Friday, while Kurt Busch will miss his second consecutive NASCAR race Sunday because of concussion-like symptoms. The IndyCar title fight begins its homestretch, while NASCAR still has a month remaining before the playoffs. And NASCAR heads into this weekend's race coming off an unprecedented disqualification of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch when their cars failed inspection after finishing 1-2 at Pocono.

The Senate Judiciary Committee intends to hold a hearing on Major League Baseball’s antitrust exemption as it relates to the employment of players in the minor leagues. There are two categories of minor league players. There are those with major league contracts on 40-man rosters, who are represented by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Those with minor league contracts are not unionized.

The first trophy of the English soccer season is up for grabs when Manchester City and Liverpool meet in the Community Shield. It's the annual match between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners. It’s a chance for players to get some more preseason minutes in their legs in a high-level match and for one of the teams to get a psychological edge heading into the start of the Premier League next week. Defending champion City and Liverpool are the two title favorites. Bayern Munich visits Leipzig in the German Super Cup between the league and cup winners.

The Taliban and an Afghan sports official say a grenade exploded during a game of cricket in Kabul, wounding at least four spectators at the stadium. No one claimed responsibility for the explosion on Friday afternoon at the International Cricket Stadium in Kabul, where several hundred people had gathered to watch the match between Band-e-Amir Dragons and Pamir Zalmi. The afternoon game was part of the domestic T20 Shpageza Cricket league games held every year. Cricket is a hugely popular sports in Afghanistan. The Taliban-appointed Kabul police spokesman, Khalid Zadran, said the game was briefly halted due to the grenade explosion but later continued.

American golfer Sean Crocker retained his one-stroke lead at the Hero Open after shooting 6-under 66 in the second round of the European tour event. The star of Day 2 was Ewen Ferguson after the Scot made 11 birdies in a bogey-free 61 at Fairmont St. Andrews. Crocker backed up his opening-round 63 and was 15 under for the tournament as he goes for a wire-to-wire win. Scott Jamieson is playing in his native Scotland and was a stroke behind alone in second place after shooting 64. There was a five-way tie for third place.

Fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia advanced to the semifinals of the Poland Open after ending the clay-court winning streak of top-ranked Iga Swiatek at 18 matches. Garcia won 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. She broke Swiatek in the 10th game of the deciding set for her first win over the Pole. Swiatek had not lost on clay since the French Open quarterfinals in 2021. France’s Garcia next plays 10th-seeded Jasmine Paolini. Lucky loser Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine faces Ana Bogdan of Romania in the other semifinal match.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Anaheim Ducks are closing in on a one-year deal with defenseman John Klingberg. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Ducks and Klingberg haven’t yet finalized every detail of the deal to bring one of the NHL’s top unsigned free agents to Orange County. Klingberg has spent his entire NHL career with the Dallas Stars, racking up 71 goals and 303 assists in eight seasons as one of the league’s better offensive defensemen. The Swede had six goals and 41 assists for Dallas last season, although he was a career-worst minus-28.

Kansas City Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt says the team prefers to renovate Arrowhead Stadium rather than build a new stadium. But that will depend on a number of studies that are examining the structural integrity of a building celebrating its opening 50 years ago this season. The future of Arrowhead will be determined just as the Chicago Bears decide whether to leave Soldier Field, which opened in 1924 and is the NFL's oldest stadium. The franchise signed a purchase agreement last year for the 326-acre site of the old Arlington Park horse racing track, which is about 30 miles northwest of its current stadium.

Austin FC says Argentine forward Emiliano Rigoni will join the Major League Soccer team under a designated player contract on a transfer from Brazilian club Sao Paolo. Financial terms were not disclosed. Austin FC said Rigoni gets a guaranteed contract through 2024 with options for the next two seasons. The club said he will join the team in the coming weeks once he receives his visa. Austin is second in the MLS Western Conference in its second season. Rigoni has scored 55 career goals.

IndyCar officials have cleared two-time series champion Josef Newgarden to qualify for Saturday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Newgarden had the second-fastest car in practice, completing his lap in 1 minute, 10.1121 seconds. Alexander Rossi had the top time at 1:10.0919. Newgarden collapsed after a hard crash in last weekend's race in Iowa — despite being cleared by doctors at the infield track care center. Series officials announced Thursday that he would be allowed to practice and then would be re-evaluated. Newgarden is tied for third with Scott Dixon, 34 points behind Indianapolis 500 champion Marcus Ericsson.

Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff says his conference is far from finished, despite the defections of Southern California and UCLA. Kliavkoff confirmed the Pac-12 is actively exploring expansion during an eventful, occasionally feisty opening speech at his conference’s football media day in the nation’s second-largest media market. While painting a promising picture of the league’s future even after USC and UCLA leave for the Big Ten in 2024, Kliavkoff also threw several jabs at the Big 12. The commissioner said he had spent the past month “trying to defend against grenades being lobbed in from every corner of the Big 12 trying to destabilize our conference.”

Major League Baseball told a Senate committee that the sport’s antitrust exemption prevents teams from moving without approval and allows the sport to maintain the minor leagues at a wide level. In addition, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said many terms of minor leaguers’ employment are determined by the Major League Baseball Players Association’s collective bargaining agreement with MLB. Leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee asked Manfred on July 18 to explain the impact of potential legislation stripping the sport’s antitrust exemption from the sport’s relationship with minor league players.

Julianna Peña pulled off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history when she took the bantamweight title from two-division champion Amanda Nunes. They fight again Saturday night at UFC 277 in Dallas. It's Peña's first defense of the title in the 135-pound division. Nunes had won 12 fights in a row before that December upset. In another rematch at UFC 277, top flyweight contenders Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France fight for an interim title in the division. Moreno won a unanimous decision over Kara-France in December 2019.

Logan Ryan won a pair of Super Bowls in New England playing with Tom Brady, picked off his final pass with the Patriots for a touchdown and has reunited with him in Tampa Bay. Getting another ring together with the Buccaneers is a clear goal.  Ryan is one of three former teammates who joined Brady in Tampa during the offseason, along with right guard Shaq Mason and defensive end Akiem Hicks. Of course, Brady lost his pal Rob Gronkowski, who retired. Ryan played both safety spots for the New York Giants the past two seasons and also took more than 200 snaps as a nickel cornerback.
